Bukichi Itoi (Japanese: 糸井武吉) is the owner of Mary's Patches & Embroidery on Dobuita Street, Yokosuka. Despite his age, he is the sole owner and employee of the little shop and still opens his shop everyday with no sign of him considering retirement. He enjoys his work and is proud of his profession. Until recently, he used to live with his son, but he moved to Kyushu for his work, so now he lives alone in apartment 201 (A) of Sakura Heights in Sakuragaoka.
Originally, Itoi was from China, but he now considers himself a naturalised Japanese which is why he has a Japanese name. He claims now to have forgotten all of his Chinese except for nihao and shay shay. In China, his name was Su Jianren.
