Shenmue I

Ryo Hazuki is the main character in the story of Shenmue, and who the player plays as. He is an 18 year old Japanese teenager who lives in Yamanose in Yokosuka, Japan. He lives at the Hazuki Residence with his father, Ine-san, the live-in housekeeper and Fuku-san, a live-in student studying the Hazuki style of Jujitsu. Ryo has been taught in the Martial Arts by his father, Iwao, since he was young. All we know about his mother is that she died when Ryo was young. Ryo is a serious person like his father, if a little reckless at times. A family photograph reveals Ryo, like Iwao, dislikes smiling in pictures.

After his father is killed by LanDi, Ryo swears vengeance for his father. He decides to drop out of Yokosuka High School while his friends and classmates study for exams. As he collects information from around Yamanose and the neighbouring town, Dobuita, Ryo is lead to New Yokosuka's Harbour and to "Master Chen" who was mentioned in a letter addressed to Ryo's father, saying to seek the aid of Master Chen should he ever need help. The meeting provides Ryo with some new information, there is a second mirror called the Phoenix Mirror.

While this is going on Ryo gets a job at the harbour as he heard a gang operates there called The Mad Angels, who may have contact with "some Chinese Bigshot" who Ryo presumes to be LanDi. The Mad Angels and Ryo come to blows a few times in the harbour, and as a result they kidnap Nozomi, Ryo's friend from school. Of course Ryo comes to her rescue and they make a deal; Terry, the leader of the Mad Angels, will take Ryo to LanDi if Ryo beats up Master Chen's son, Guizhang. Ryo confronts Guizhang and asks for him to lose, explaining that Terry will take him to LanDi if he does. During the fight Terry tries to kill them both, leading the two of them to take on the entire Mad Angels gang. Master Chen believes that LanDi has left Japan, heading for Hong Kong, so Ryo decides he will head there next. Guizhang says that he will accompany him to Hong Kong, but a confrontation between Ryo and Chai leaves Guizhang with an injury meaning he is unable to travel with him. Ryo leaves Japan heading for Hong Kong taking the Phoenix Mirror with him and a letter of introduction from Master Chen telling him of a Martial Arts master named Master Tao who should be able to help him.

Shenmue II

Ryo arrives in Aberdeen, Hong Kong and sets about trying to find Wan Chai where Master Tao is supposed to live. He runs into a girl named Joy and later has his bag stolen by some street thugs. He eventually gets his bag back and soon finds that the address he has been given for Master Mo is no help as she doesn't live there anymore. Eventually he discovers where Man Mo Temple is and comes into contact with who he has been seeking - Xiuying Hong.

Despite this, Xiuying is reluctant to aid Ryo with the information he needs to continue because she believes he is falling onto the wrong path. Ryo continues his investigations without her help by asking people about Yuandha Zhu in Wan Chai. Soon he comes into contact with someone who works for Yuandha Zhu but he doesn't know his whereabouts as he has gone into hiding. He tells Ryo there is something he can do, and that is to find Ren of Heavens, the leader of a gang that operates in Aberdeen, but warns him that Ren is a dangerous man. Ryo is later able to find Ren and finds out just how dangerous he can be, but through his persistence and the thought that money might be involved, Ren tells Ryo that Yuandha Zhu is in Kowloon.

Ryo heads to Kowloon with Ren where he encounters Dou Niu, the leader of the Yellow Heads gang that operates in that area and who are also looking for Yuandha Zhu. Through much investigation Ryo manages to find Yuandha Zhu but before he can even ask him anything he is kidnapped by Dou Niu. Ryo realises the only way to get inside the Yellow Head building is to be scouted as a possible new member, so to draw attention to himself he participates in street fights around Kowloon. Eventually he is head-hunted by a scout for the Yellow Heads and is told to meet with one of them which he does. Ren decides to follow him and knock the scout unconscious and the two of them now have access to the Yellow Head building. The building is incredibly tall and through many, many fights with various members of the gang, including Yuan, they make it to the roof. By this point Joy and Wong have joined them and on the roof they find Dou Niu with Yuandha Zhu who they are about to deliver to LanDi who is flying overhead in a helicopter. Ryo fights with Dou Niu and eventually, remembering what he has been taught by Xiuying and what is on the line with this fight, he is able to defeat him and save Yuandha Zhu. LanDi takes off and they all head back to Ren's Hideout. It's here that they finally get to ask Yuandha Zhu some questions, he explains that the reason LanDi killed Iwao was because he believes Iwao killed his father, Zhao Sunming. Yuandha Zhu doesn't know if this is true but does know that Zhao Sunming did die. He also explains about the Dragon and Phoenix Mirrors and that when they are brought together they form a key and tells that LanDi has probably gone to Bailu Village in Guilin. Ryo heads on to Guilin alone.

Once Ryo arrives in Guilin he starts the long trek towards Bailu Village, where on the way he meets a girl, Shenhua, who offers to show him the way as it is near where she lives. They walk for two days and eventually arrive at Shenhua's house where she lives with her adoptive father. In the house, Ryo finds some drawings of the Dragon and Phoenix Mirrors, so the next morning Shenhua and Ryo go to see her father in the stone pit where he is working but he is missing He has left behind a note and a sword, and on the wall two giant versions of the Dragon and Phoenix Mirrors...
